A new City Manager for the City of Dayton, Kentucky wanted to work quickly to update the city’s aging website. I worked to first ensure that the site’s navigation could compress while also being easy to actually use. We settled on a big-block categorical navigation with nested links as well as an additional “always-up” menu for the most-often used links.

In trying to update the city’s operations the administration also wanted to make Dayton look more appealing to visitors, and potential residents and businesses. As one way to tackle this I incorporated striking drone footage of the home page’s hero slider while also leaving this section flexible to be changed by the staff for future needs.

One important item for the administration was the incorporation of an alert feature. This allows city officials to add important alerts or notices to the website in an un-missable eye-catching format to ensure residents and others can be quickly and efficiently informed of critical information as needed. This alert feature was built with some flexibility in message delivery. One option provided for a top-banner message seen on every page throughout the website, and another separate option provided a large alert area box on the home page only.

The website also included fully-integrated accessibility features including text-resizing, high-contrast options, and several other features.
