Busken Bakery Walk-Up Window 2022

During COVID-19 early lockdown, Busken Bakery installed a new walk-up window along a city walking path at their location in Hyde Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. The window sells a limited unique selection of completely fresh donuts, including the Halo donut which includes a scoop of area-local Grater’s Ice Cream as filling.

The walk-up window had been open for a while before the yarn installation was dreamed-up as a way to attract attention to the new fixture. Brand colors of blue and yellow were used to complement the existing aesthetic, and a form was used that utilized existing structures and maximized the existing space. Of course, my primary focus was on creating something striking and I used the limited space to revisit the idea of multiple levels of yarn to create visual interest with changing physical perspectives.

The piece was installed in May 2022 and is still currently installed at the Busken Bakery Hyde Park location on Madison Road in Cincinnati.

There has been some savage weather go through the region in the months since this piece was installed, including a storm which destroyed the crown of the tree in my home’s front yard. Each time I’ve ventured up to Hyde Park expecting disaster and each time the piece is perfectly fine like nothing was ever a problem. The client is thrilled.

“I think it’s survived three tornadoes.” — Brian Busken
