Resonate 2024

I’ve done installations at nearly every camping festival ever thrown by Essential Productions, including every Resonance. Resonate, on the other hand was in Florida during COVID the first years. I attended my first Resonate in 2023 where I put up an installation, and in the course of creating that installation I had an accidental collaboration with the Laser Fox team, who are now friends. For 2024 we intentionally collaborated to attempt to create effects that would maximize interactions with yarn and lasers. So for the design I chose to do something that nobody typically ever lets me do, which is a dimensional woven piece. This type of piece is something that doesn’t look great in a rendering and previous pieces have proven exceptionally difficult to capture in photos or video.

The yarn is woven in a rough vertical pattern. From top to bottom the colors are fluorescent green, fuschia, pink, orange, and yellow. Upper and lower wires were used along the perimeter and yarn was woven between both as new layers were added to create overlapping vertical depth. The woven pattern and setup was chosen to create depth and overlapping of yarn strands in varying directions so that patterns projected by the lasers onto the yarn would create light movement in unpredictable ways. We were all very happy with the effect created by (3) 10W lasers. Pulsing UV light was used in a very slow period of repeat, causing the strands to fade in and out at the yarn’s natural fluorescent color while the laser light chases around in varying colors of laser light.

Once again, the effect is extremely difficult to capture on video.

Since the piece used lasers which scanned the upper section of an acrobat structure the lasers needed to be turned off periodically each night. This left the piece with only a slow pulse of UV light, bringing the fluorescent yarn in and out of brightness.
